Mental health in Emergency Department Study day

This study day will help you know more about mental health and its various aspects in a busy emergency department. We will talk about the issues that clinicians find challenging to tackle, such as suicidal ideation and self-harm. We will look at common mental health problems and the key features, what to look out for and how to recognise them. We will also discuss drugs and alcohol, rapid tranquilisation in ED, capacity assessment, suicide risk assessment, acute behavioural disturbances, and common psychiatric emergencies and SIMS. Different type of mental health act sections relevant to ED and all the legality around it. DOLS and its implications. Role of police in ED, in terms of bring in a patient who is acutely unwell in their mental health, MHA vs MCA, MH in children and CAMHS, Gillick competence, safeguarding, restraining, role of hospital security, eating disorders, acute confusion  and the list goes on. Importantly, we will equip you with ways of asking about and speaking to patients about mental health in order to reduce those common anxieties such as ‘opening a can of worms’ or ‘making things worse’.
We will talk about what help is available and how to understand what the services are available in ED and how to access them. How to self-refer & what are the different therapies that clinicians think of.
