At British Medical courses we are NOT just another acute ophthalmology Study day.

Created by Ophthalmologists & ED Consultants with special interest in acute eye related problems and vast experience in management of acute eye related problems in ED!
We Teach You What Other Courses Can’t
We believe in one to one learning with custom tailored learning plans!
There are few true ophthalmic emergencies, but it is important for emergency clinicians to be aware of ophthalmic conditions where immediate action needs to be taken. A seasoned ED clinician should be able to promptly recognise and manage these condition so that sight can be preserved. This study day will act as a guide for emergency clinicians in the assessment and management of some of the most important emergency ophthalmic presentations.
There is a fear among junior doctors when it comes to acute ophthalmology in ED as most of them have never been exposed to these conditions and procedures like removing a corneal foreign body with a needle or performing lateral canthotomy and even when to perform it!
An EM clinician should have a variety of differentials up their sleeve to maximise the chances to diagnosing and managing some of the conditions outlined below:
Approach towards acute red eye: painful/ painless, corneal foreign bodies and acute conjunctivitis. Discharge from eye and tests to establish their aetiology. Management of acute angle closure glaucoma and globe rupture. Management of penetrating eye injury.
Management of acute visual loss, painless/ painful. Retinal detachment and floaters in ED.
Acute eye infections and trauma. Imaging choices. Uveitis, keratitis, endophthalmitis and much more.
Role of fundoscopy in ED and when to refer.
We feel that Training often provides limited hands-on exposure to eye care, and the combination of diverse presentations and specialised tools can make these cases seem intimidating. However, with a systematic approach and a focus on key skills, managing ophthalmic cases in the ED becomes more approachable and that’s what we aim to deliver.
After completing this study day, you’ll have the opportunity to take our proprietary mock exam to demonstrate your understanding. Successfully completing it earns you a certificate celebrating your accomplishment.
