Most of the emergency department in the UK, 2/3rds of the patient population presenting to the ED are older and frail. They present with any of the following geriatric syndromes: delirium, falls, polypharmacy, mobility, continence problems, memory issues, infections, movement disorders, lack of package of care, safeguarding concerns, vulnerability, exacerbation of existing medical problems, silver trauma and syncope to name a few
Identification of frailty helps to improve both long and short term healthcare provisions for these patients. As such, they will require a more in-depth comprehensive geriatric assessment where possible. Early recognition of frailty is important in planning and tailoring any interventions which is why frailty/ Occupational therapy teams work side by side in managing these patients.
In this study day, we aim to discuss all these problems and update ourselves with latest guidance from the experts.
